We analyzed Indeed job descriptions to find which programming languages appear most frequently and compared it to previous years to find the most in-demand programming languages in 2023. Our previous top seven programming languages will help us better understand how we decided on the top programming languages of 2022.
Here are the top 7 programming languages compared to 2022 from previous years
On the basis of the chart above, every other top language except PHP and Perl has grown in demand in 2023. Even though they were two of the biggest risers in 2021 when most other languages stagnated, neither made it into the top 10. Many popular programming languages went back to basics in 2022.
Coronavirus dropped the demand for every programming language
All of the languages on this year’s list have seen an increase in demand. The Covid-19 pandemic changed what we know about software development. It has become increasingly important to hire employees due to the pandemic, especially programmers.
Every top language’s demand declined significantly between 2020 and 2021, as shown in the chart above. The number of Python jobs fell by around 30% from approximately 74,000 to 70,500.

It’s a completely different story this year. In particular, Java, the first programming language we found to have over 80,000 active job listings, saw a huge jump, becoming the top language with over 50,000 jobs listed. Python, Java, SQL, and Javascript all have over 50,000 jobs listed.
Considering that the U.S. economy alone created jobs than any other year ever, it makes sense. In spite of the fact that the recovery from March 2020 took some time and is still occurring in many ways-computer programming jobs have returned in a big way.
Which languages will be the most popular in 2023?
Employers are looking for programming languages that are most in demand.
Given that the ranking had undergone many drastic changes recently, we see a few relatively big changes from last year. Three newcomers made the list this year (Go, C, and Assembly), while three dropped off (R, Visual Basic, and Objective C).
Why you should learn Go
It won’t surprise many that Go is on the rise, although it’s certainly not the most surprising. This relatively new open-source project was created in 2009 and is currently used by some of the most popular and important open-source applications and companies. Docker, Kubernetes, Cloudflare, Ethereal, Gitlab, Uber, Google, Netflix, Twitch, and many others are included in that list.
In light of the fact that generations born after the Internet will become more influential in online culture, it is likely that Go will remain popular for a long time. The companies that use Google worthwhile important to note. You’ll need knowledge of Go if you want to work at a large, but growing tech company offering meaningful products.
Python loses its top spot
There was no coding language around that grew faster than Python in 2018. Since then, it has cooled down a little bit. Java has surpassed Python as the most popular programming language,
How does this affect people looking to learn Python or programmers who already did? Fortunately, not much. For several years now both Java and Python have been the two most popular programming languages, swapping the top spot three times now.
It is still one of the most widely used languages in modern coding, despite it being relatively simple to learn. The demand for Python actually grew this year because it is still one of the easiest languages to learn. Hence, PyPython. 1 spot is not because of its decline in popularity, but rather because Java has become more in demand as a programming language.
There is likely to be an increase in Python’s popularity as more and more aspiring or experienced programmers pick up the language. In the meantime, most developers should learn Python so they can take imperative of the market when it becomes saturated.
Objective C vs. C
One notable change on this year’s list compared to last is the absence of Objective C and a newcomer, C, taking its spot. The two languages share some similarities, but there are a few differences that might explain this change.
In the Apple ecosystem, Objective C is heavily used in macOS and iOS. It is less common outside of the Apple ecosystem. Since 2014, Swift has been Apple’s standard programming language. Despite the changes, Objective C will continue to have its uses. However, it makes sense that C, a more general language that was used to develop Objective C, has grown more in recent years.
2022’s risers fall quickly
Last year, Visual Basic and R climbed the charts with increased demand. The early half of the year was particularly unique due to the effects of the pandemic on the job market. The situation was different in 2022, however.
In addition to falling drastically, these two also fell considerably. In 2021, 50,000 listings were found for each language, compared to 7,000 listings for R and 4,800 listings for Visual Basic. Due to the fact that both jobs became scarce once 2021’s jobs were filled, this steep decline may occur.

Demand for programmers isn’t going anywhere
Programmers are no longer in demand because of the pandemic. Although demand dropped, it wasn’t as significant as in other industries, so it’s not surprising that things have picked up again. It is pertinentrtant to note that demand should only increase from here on out.
It is noteworthy to note that demand for the last few items on the list has dropped significantly. While most other programming languages declined this year, several of the most in-demand coding languages saw the biggest increases. Companies may be evaluating only the most commonly used languages. One company or one trend can boost the popularity of a new language, as it did with Java this year, so coding languages won’t become homogenized.
